The author, Dr. Anthonie Johannes Theodorus Janse (1877-1970) was a pioneer of South African entomology (insects), who specialised in Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies). He is credited for the discovery of over 500 new species of moths and butterflies and his eight volume work The Moths of South Africa (1932-1964) is the definitive work on the subject.
