'THE SOUTH AFRICAN ANNUAL OF ADVERTISING ART is a natural development of the annual exhibition of advertising art organized in Johannesburg by the Imprint Society and held for the first time in 1946. This exhibition provided, and will continue to provide, an opportunity to the graphic artists of South Africa: by its means they may each year bring examples of their best work before the public.

This annual publication will embody the exhibition in a permanent and portable form, easily available for reference, and it should in time become a directory of the graphic arts in South Africa, containing not only names and addresses but also inserts and articles showing present achievement, the influence of tradition, and trends and tendencies for the future.

The articles chosen for the issue do not represent more than a small fraction of what could be written on so vast a subject as graphic art in all its manifestations, but they should be of value and interest.
