Before Lewis’s work, the genus Babiana (part of the Iridaceae family) was in a state of taxonomic confusion. Lewis provided the first comprehensive modern revision of the genus, describing over 60 species. Her work is important for the classification of these plants many of which are endemic to the winter-rainfall regions of the Western and Northern Cape.
