'Veld Plants of Southern Africa is the only book available which deals with both the identification and usefulness of a wide range of significant plants, trees, shrubs and succulents to be found in the veld. The distribution of many of these embraces all four provinces of South Africa, South West Africa and neighbouring states.

Each species is so illustrated, in colour as well as black and white, that it is not necessary for the reader to be a botanist to be able to recognise and identify the plants. For the purist and botanist there is a botanical description. For the layman and farmer notes and anecdotes concerning each plant are given, with the emphasis laid on their usefulness or otherwise from the grazing point of view. Other uses (e.g. medicinal and poisonous) to which the plants have been put, are also included.

The selection covers a wide range of plants, from annuals to long-lived trees, so that with the knowledge here presented a good assessment of the value of the veld can be made.' - editor's note
