Publisher's/photographer's original fold-out portfolio of 12 captioned photographic views of early Johannesburg.

This portfolio dates from around 1892-1894 as it contains a photograph of The New Globe Theatre, which, originally, was called The Globe Theatre until it burned down in October 1889 - only four months after opening. Apparently a paraffin lamp crashed and set the stage curtain alight, with the fire then consuming the entire building. A New Globe Theatre was built, opening in 1892, which ran for almost two years before a change of ownership. The theatre was renamed and formally opened on 1 December, 1894, as the Empire Palace of Varieties.

Another interesting photograph is that of the Rand Club, where, less than four years after this portfolio was published, the Jameson Conspirators would hatch a crooked scheme to overthrow President Paul Kruger's government.
