'In September of the year 1886, the Witwatersrand Gold Fields were proclaimed as public diggings. Shortly after, a Diggers' Committee was formed under the old Gold Law. In 1887 the Chamber of Mines was formed with the following objects:
"To collect, arrange and from time to time publish information connected with the mining industries of the Transvaal, and particularly of the Witwatersrand Gold Fields, and to watch over and promote those industries generally; to arrange for scientific and technical papers to be read before members; and to confer with the Diggers' Committee on matters of interest." '
The information connected with the mining industries of the Transvaal was published in the annual reports.
