[The best testimonial I can give this book is to relate that I started reading it (again) after I had completed my description but forgotten to upload it. Those familiar with the vagaries of the internet will not need to be told that I was cut off from my target address and lost half-an-hour's work. I don't want to go back to the typewriters and mail of Hanff's 'forties, 'fifties and 'sixties, but they were less temperamental]
This splendid "De Luxe Gift Edition" of "84, Charing Cross Road" is a handsome tribute to two bibliophiles on opposite sides of the Atlantic, the writer Helene Hanff in New York (who signed our copy) and the bookseller Frank Dold in London.
From its superbly conceived laminated dustjacket through its leather and gilt covers and matching blue endpapers to its crisp letterpress on creamy white wove paper, it does full justice to its light and charming text. Credits are called for, and some were given: the designer was Jacqueline Schuman and the typeface was Linotype Monticello.
Our copy, now 38 years old but with no ownership history, is highly collectable. The dustjacket has a small chip at the upper front fold and the unlaminated reverse is sunned at the edges. The covers are perfect. The front free endpaper is lightly sunned at the top and the back paste-down shows traces of adhesive at the top. The red-tinted top edge is fine, but there are a few spots of foxing to the unguillotined fore-edge. That's all!
