Provenance: McIver family (by descent, sold at auction).
A potential crisis for Sir Samuel Cunard and his co-owners, David McIver and Sir George Burns, of the British and North American Royal Mail Steam Packet Company. The British Royal Navy warns the chief operator of the British and North American Royal Mail Steam Packet Company (later known as the Cunard line). The Admiralty updates their earlier letter of 30th June 1857, concerning the requirement that “Screw Steamer vessels employed in the conveyance of His Majesty’s Mails being fitted with means of raising the Propeller at Sea; and my Lords desire me to inform you that no new Steam vessel will henceforward be accepted for your Contract Mail Service unless fitted with necessary appliance”.
