The first four A-Z volumes of SABIB - the abbreviation for for "South African Bibliography to 1925" - were published in London in 1979 on behalf of the South African Library by Mansell Publishers, which had experience of similar work for other national libraries. Volumes 5 and 6 (Supplement and Indexes) were published in 1991 and 1997 by the South African Library itself.
The basis was Sidney Mendelssohn's classic two-volume work of 1910 but the coverage was more exhaustive, so that "Not in SABIB" is rarer than "Not in Mendelssohn". The set, however, supplements rather than replaces Mendelssohn because, for space reasons, it omits Mendelssohn's informed and invaluable mini-essays and comments on the books he described.
The set is an essential reference work for Africana specialists.
The volumes are uniformly bound in bright red cloth, gilt to the front and spine. This set is not only complete (most sets offered comprise only the first four volumes) but is in very good and unmarked condition.
