\". . . Studies oor die Afrikaanse taal en literere volkskultuur van voor 1875\"
This is a compilation of articles on Afrikaans language and literature before 1875 published in various journals between 1934 and 1964.
Although Afrikaans was not recognised as a written language in its own right until as late as the 1920s, it was in the process of evolving from High Dutch and other languages for almost a century before that. Indeed, the earliest example in this work is a letter written in 1829.
As well as language, the book also studies the earliest Afrikaans literature and, briefly, its cultural history.
Only two stamps and a discreet label on the title page and a similar label on the spine of the jacket indicate that the book was once in a library. These apart, the book has few defects: the front endpapers have been pasted together; there is a brown stain on the half-title where an adhesive label may have been removed; there is light shelf-wear on the covers and spine; and the front hinge of the binding is a little floppy. For the rest, the jacket is almost perfectly preserved in clear plastic; the grey cloth-boards, black design to the panel and spine and white lettering on the spine and both covers, are clean and unbumped; and the ix + 342 pp of text, notes and index are unmarked and undiscoloured. There are no signs that the book was ever read.
