An original letterpress and manuscript ‘Tea License’ ‘No. 129 No. 8’, dated 9th September 1814, in which Elliot and Spooner acknowledging the receipt of 5/6d in exchange for which ‘Mary Walton’(a ‘Dealer in Coffee, Tea, and Chocolate, living at Tamworth ‘) is permitted and authorized ‘to trade in, sell, and vend Coffee, Tea , and Chocolate, in the House, and Places thereunto belonging, wherein she now dwells, and nowhere else’ from 10th September 1814 to 190th September 1815. Single sheet (9 ¾ x 5 1/8in; 247 x 130mm), signed by both Elliott & Spooner, double ink duty-stamp in red. Condition: laid down, stained, faded.
A rarity for the time: a woman is granted a license to sell Tea, Coffee and Chocolate.
