Askaris were native troops employed by the German Colonial Army (Schutztruppe). The first Askaris in German East Africa were raised by the German East Africa Company (Deutsche Ost-Afrika Gesellschaft). For four years (1914-18), with a force that never exceeded 14,000 ( up to 11,000 Askaris), General Paul Emil von Lettow-Vorbeck held at bay a force of 300,000 British, Belgian, and Portuguese troops, thus becoming the only German commander to successfully hold 'British soil' during World War I.
