Haines “had one of finest scientifically valuable [shell] collections in the world consisting of twelve thousand species” (Shellers from Past and Present). Haines notes, in the remarks on the verso of the title, that this work was ‘printed for private reference, and to enable me to indicate to my correspondents what are my desiderata. Of very many of the species I have duplicates to offer in exchange’. Sabin 29559.
