Despite being published 82 years ago this book - translated from the original English edition - remains invaluable for South African academics as well as other researchers and Africana collectors.
Within the space of ix + 110 pages, the author, who at the time was the chief archivist for the Union of South Africa, lists and describes the holdings of the archives of the Cape, Natal, Transvaal and Orange Free State provinces. Six appendixes deal with relevant laws and regulations, offer a list of publications relating to documents in the Cape Archives, and list copies in the Cape Archives of original documents held in Europe. There is also an index.
The plum cloth-boards, gilt to spine, are water-stained but otherwise near very good. The plain endpapers and several other leaves at the back and front and the page edges generally carry dark red stains. There are no ownership or other marks.
