Vierte vermehrte und verbesserte Auflage Leipzig: 1743 . 2 volumes in one, small octavo (7 x 4 1/8in; 178 x 104mm). Pp. [i-xiv;1-]629;[i-xxvii]. [i-xii; 1-]686; [i-xx]. Engraved frontispiece, 13 foldout plates at the rear, woodcut illustrations. (Small rust thole pp.59/60 in vol.I, light old folds to foremargins of some plates). Contemporaray calf, spines gilt, marbled endpapers (some damage to foredges of boards, light overall scuffing). Provenance: Christoph Froschmayr Edler von Scheibenhof  (collector of books on alchemy, armorial bookplate ‘Christo. Froschmayr E v. Scheibenhof’, inscription at foot of p.148 in the first volume, and at the front).  

Gottsched's main philosophical and scientific work - a nice copy from a distiguished collection. Subjects covered include astronomy, physics and anatomy, with some exlanatory plates. Gottsched was "a German philosopher, author, and critic. For about thirty years, he exercised an almost undisputed literary dictatorship in Germany Res." (Wikipedia). Ziegenfuss I, 413; Goedeke III, 361, VIII, 40
