Appendix One gives a description of Marotseland (present-day Barotseland), a region in the western part of Zambia,the homeland of the Lozi people (or Barotse who were previously known as Luyi or Aluyi).

This book is a narrative of the author's journey to what is now Upper Zambia. As a captain in the 3rd East Yorkshire Regiment and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society he brings an early eye to the geography,customs and hunting of Central Africa.

Charles Whymper , the artist, 1853-1941, was known for his work on expeditions to Africa.
