xviii plus 416pp. Original blind embossed cover with gilt title to spine. Illustrations and map.

Ex Library, usual stamps and markings. Cover scuffed and worn on edges. EP hinges cracked. Light occassional foxing throughout. One of the maps is missing.

A classic on the Mahdi's Rebellion in the Sudan in the latter portion of the 19th century, with chapters on the massacre of Billy Hicks' Egyptian army, the Fall of Khartoum in which Chinese Gordon was killed, the siege of Darfur, etc. Slatin was captured and tortured by the Mahdi's forces, and describes his experiences in great detail.
