Signed, 5 x original lithographs, in original frames and surround, under glass, 240 x 310mm, condition : very good.
Each lithograph was made up of six separate drawings directly on the plates, inked and applied to the paper so that each colour would contribute to the composite whole. Accordingly the lithograph has been signed as such. The Lithographs were commissioned by Mer-National Laboratories (South African Druggists). In original frames with backing papers.
The Lithographs are
- The Ngwane Woman, depicting tribal observances during pregnancy.
- Die VendaVrou, beads and amulets are worn to appease the ancestors.
- The Sangoma, depicting the burning of aromatic herbs.
- Die Xhosamoder en Kind, with a agapanthus root necklace for the health of her baby.
- Die Thwasa or learner witchdoctor stirs medicinal roots with water until froth rises.
Barbara Tyrrell is the author of 'Tribal Peoples of Southern Africa' and 'Suspicion is my Name'.
Included in this lot is the book, 'Her African Quest' by Barbara Tyrrell.
