This is a fourth impression of the first edition, which came out three months after the first impression. At the time it was published, opinions about the greatness or otherwise of Hemingway's novel were divided. Sir Hugh Walpole said of it: "This is not a great novel [by the author he called the most important of living American novelists]. It is too mannered, too limited by Hemingway's own personality. But it is a very fine novel, and everybody ought to read it."
The dedication reads: "This book is for Martha Gellhorn".
