Oxford University Press, 1922, foreword by J.C.Smuts, illustrations by Gwelo Goodman, Arthur Elliott, Montrose Cloete and others, gilt lettering, border and design to blue boards, bookplate 'Gorham Mathematics Prize, 1923, Diocesan College (Bishops), Rondebosch, also Diocesan College crest on back board, approximately 190 plates, also figures in the text, 191 pages,  uncut, 230 x 295 mm, condition: very good.

This author of this book, essentially an illustrated study of old Cape Dutch farmsteads and houses, was the daughter of the distinguished lawyer, scholar and Cape Town parliamentarian, Charles Fairbridge. In 1855 Fairbridge moved a proposal in the Legislature to inquire into the establishment of the South African Museum. He was also a trustee of the Sir George Grey bequest to the South African Library.
