There is no provenance for this copy, but the handwriting of the signature and year - "D.F. Malan. 1949." appears genuine in a comparison with Dr Malan's signatures and handwriting dating from this period. (D F Malan was the National Party leader who succeeded the United Party's General Smuts as Prime Minister in 1948. He is frequently mentioned in Macdonald's book.) A second signature is on page 100. (See images)
This copy lacks the dustjacket. The original red cloth-boards are rubbed and the replacement black leathercloth spine has no lettering. A price-code and “15/-“ are in pencil on the front paste-down. The free endpapers are sunned. The front free endpaper doubles as the half-title, and this is followed by the frontispiece. There are 16 other pp of b/w plates, while the book itself, unmarked except as already indicated, has 271 pp of text and index.
