This copy is better than those usually found. The book is loosely based on the author\'s 1932 University of Cape Town doctoral thesis, when his promotor was the well-known historical writer Professor Eric A Walker. The author states that although the book is more popularly written and concise than the thesis it retains academical strictness, and includes an essay on sources, appendixes, index and six maps on two folding sheets at the back of the book. The first publication was in 1937.
The oatmeal cloth boards, with red and green lettering and design, are lightly blistered at the front, with three of the four corners lightly rubbed. There is an owner\'s signature on the front free endpaper. The rest of the book - viii + 181 pp plus the folding maps - are all near fine, unmarked and undiscoloured.
