Enid Blyton's books were likened to 'slow poison' by the critic Magery Fisher, and Jean Sutcliffe ( BBC Schools Broadcast Department), marvelled at Blyton's ability to churn out "mediocre material", noting that "her capacity to do so, amounts to genius ... anyone else would have died of boredom long ago". Blyton, in turn,  expressed a total disinterest in the views of anyone over 12 years of age.

Nevertheless, the Famous Five are ever popular and the 'Enid Blyton Society' today provides a focal point for enthusiasts and collectors.
