Some tide marks present but overall a lovely copy.

Original blind-embossed hardcover with gilt title to spine.

Folding colour-tinted lithograph frontispiece of Victoria Falls by W. West.

Fine steel-engraved portrait of the author facing Introduction page.

1 other double-tinted lithograph by West opposite page 66.

1 single tinted lithograph from a sketch by C. Bell opposite page 225 and printed by West.

Scarce 1st issue with the three tinted plates which were replaced

with b&w wood engravings in later issues.

This edition conforms to the scarce 'Bradlow Variant No.1',

where Bradlow quotes research done by Gaston Renard (Bookseller),

who cites this variant as the true first issue, although he does remark

that this "is not yet proved" , [Lloyd , LIVINGSTONE 1873-1973, p.14).
