Part I: Events previous to the arrival of the South Africans, Part II: The concentric Attack by superior forces,(from the arrival of the South African Troops to the loss of the Colony). Part III: Fighting on Foreign Soil, (from the crossing into Portuguese East Africa to the Armistice).
The author was the commander of the Imperial German Army in the German East Africa campaign. For four years, with a force that never exceeded 14,000 ( Germans and Africans), he held at bay a force of 300,000 British, Belgian, and Portuguese troops. Undefeated in the field, the author was the only German commander to successfully hold 'British soil' during World War I. His exploits have become legendary and his campaign is now seen "as the greatest single guerrilla operation in history, and the most successful." [Hoyt, Edwin P. The Germans who never lost. New York, 1968.]
