New Dialogues of the Dead, Written in FRENCH very lately. And now made ENGLISH,1654, binding in full leather with laced boards, 140 pages, pastedowns have been replaced ,some marks on Title Page, book has been extensively renovated, condition:very good

The original Dialogues of the Dead ((Νεκρικοὶ Διάλογοι) is a model of witty, polished composition by Lucian, a skeptic, a scoffer and a satirist. He did not believe in any afterlife, thought the Professions were worthless and ridiculed Mythology and Philosophy. He puts words in the mouths of Kings and Aristocrats, reminding them how much more they have lost by death than he. The imaginary Dialogues explore our failure to realize the transience of greatness and wealth. The cool satirical tone of Dialogues caught on in 17th Century France under Louis IV (le Roi Soleil) and became New Dialogues. The book is in three parts of six dialogues each, The Dialogues of the Ancient Dead, and Dialogues of the Ancient Dead, with the Modern Dead, and Dialogues of the Modern Dead . Dialogues between Alexander and Phrinea, Dido and Stratonice, Sapho and Laura, Socrates and Montaigne, Mary of England and Anne of Brittany, Elizabeth of England and the Duke of Alenzon amongst others.
