BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Walt WHITMAN (1819-1892). - Robert Andrew PARKER (b.1927).
Original artwork for a re-imagined portrait of 99 Ryerson St., Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, N.Y., the house where Whitman wrote at least part of 'Leaves of Grass'. [Undated]. Sheet size: 12 ½ x 9 7/8in; 318 x 226mm. Original pen, ink and watercolor, signed along the left lower margin. Provenance: bought from the artist.
"The Ryerson Street house is one of the oldest existing New York City buildings associated with someone who would now be considered an LGBTQ+ resident Whitman, four of his brothers and his parents lived there between May 1, 1855, and May 1, 1856." (Brooklyn Eagle).
The first edition of 'Leaves of Grass' was published on 4th July 1855. The present drawing imagines the house as it would have been during Whitman’s time (it now has an additional floor and the siding has been replaced). The artist thinks that this drawing was done for the New Yorker, but is not certain when or if it was ever used?
