Demy 8vo; original mustard-coloured cloth blocked in black and red; tinted edges; pp. xiii + (i) + 224, incl. index; diagrams. Extremities slightly rubbed; sporadic foxing; small ink stamp \"Supplied for the Public Service\" to prelim. Very good condition. Sir Michael Frederic Rimington (1858-1928) \"recruited a body of men (mainly from Natal) who were known as \'Scouts\' or \'Guides\', the intention being that they should operate as an Intelligence body rather than as a fighting unit. He did good work at Belmont (23.11.1899) and later (December 11) distinguished himself at Magersfontein. ... From January to March 1901 he served under General J. French in the Eastern Transvaal ... after which he operated in the North-Eastern Free State, earning for himself a reputation for very rapid movement. ... After the war Rimington became Inspector of Cavalry in India. He was pre-eminently a cavalryman, published a manual of hints on stable-management and became (1915) Commander of the Legion of Honour. He was appointed C.B. in 1900 and created K.C.B. in 1921.\" - DSAB IV, pp. 503-4. In his brief preface, the author states that \"In this book no attempt has been made to produce an exhaustive treatise on Cavalry; it has been written principally for junior officers of all arms.\"
