FINE BINDING. – Isaac PITMAN.
Phonography; or Writing by Sound … adapted also to the English Language as a complete system of Short Hand … Fifth Edition, Improved. Seventieth Thousand. London: Samuel Bagster & Sons, 1842. 16mo (4 ¾ x 3in; 121 x 76mm). Pp. [1-]64. (Short clean tears to outer margins of pp. 35-44.) Original maroon leather by 'W. Taylor, binder, of Bath', covers with an elaborate decorative outer border blocked in blind, the upper cover with decorative central panel in gilt, cream-glazed endpapers. Provenance: C.C. Wharton (inscription dated 1843).
A best-seller, but now rare in this condition in a ‘de luxe’ leather binding. The binding has the look of a publisher's 'de luxe' binding, but this is counteracted by the 'W.Taylor' stamp on the rare pastedown, showing that the binding was carried out in Bath.
