Dr. Richard BROOKES. The General Dispensatory, Containing a Translation of the Pharmacopoedias of the Royal Colleges of Physicians.... London: printed for J. Newbery, 1753. 12mo signed in sixes (6 1/4 x 3 5/8 inches; 156 x 92 mm). Pp. [i-]iv-viii; [1-]2, *1-*2, 3-408; [i-viii only]. (Lacking 20pp. of indices). Early 19th-century American marbled leather, the flat spine divided into compartments by double horizontal gilt fillets, red morocco lettering-piece in the second compartment, owner's name 'J.R. Simpson' lettered in gilt at the foot of the spine. Provenance: A. Mearns (signature to title); J.R. Simpson (binding).

An attractive US binding - to have the owner's name on the spine appears to be unusual. The contents are in good condition, but (an its a big 'but') the final 20 pages of the indices are missing.
