In his foreword, Sir Robert Tredgold, then chief justice of Southern Rhodesia and honorary president of the Rhodesia Pioneers and Early Settlers Society, commends the author for researching and compiling the book on behalf of the society.

The book, described as "the story of the early days of Southern Rhodesia compiled from reminiscences of some of the pioneers", runs to xiv + 144 pp of main text (starting with biographical details of the 14 pioneers whose reminiscences provided the skeleton of the book) + 14 pp of inserted plates and a folding map, with this main section followed by a further 18 pp of the history and objectives of the society and lists of more than 1300 former and (then) present members (the first 11 of whom were born between 1859 and 1875). The main chapter headings: The beginning of white settlement; The Rhodes-Judd concession; The Pioneers; Mashonaland; Manicaland; The Matabele War; and Rebellion.

On the front paste-down of our copy are 19 April 1954 signatures of C J A and S W Blackler and 11 other members of the society and their dates of arrival in Bulawayo (starting in 1894).

The unclipped dustjacket (12s 6d) is chipped and stained and has two 1.5-cm-long holes in the front fold. The red cloth covers, gilt to the front and spine, and the binding are in very good condition.

Loosely inserted is a folded compliments slip of the society.

The endpapers, frontispiece verso and page edges are foxed. The remaining text pages and plates are unmarked and undiscoloured, making this a more than acceptable copy of a valuable historical record.
