This is an excellent copy of a book intended to mark "the opening of a new chapter in in the history of South Africa . . . with a valedictory review of some of the less-known events and conditions of the Old Regime before they have become indistinct and hazy, and possibly perverted in the re-telling".
Its chapters cover the early secret service in the Cape Colony, secret service pioneers, the illicit liquor trade and both illicit gold and illicit diamond buying, gun-running and the Boer secret service under Dr Leyds.
The red-brown cloth-boards, gilt to the front and the spine, are bumped at the extremities. The binding remains tight. The top edge is gilt and the other edges are rough-cut. The unfoxed and otherwise unmarked endpapers have a neat owner signature on the front free leaf. xi + 380 pp of text and index. No illustrations.
