Already "South Africa's most distinguished writer for children" [blurb], Shades was Poland's second novel (the first was Train to Doringbult, 1987) and in her professional capacity as anthropologist and ethnologist she was later to author (with the same Hammond-Tooke) The Abundant Herds. A Celebration of the Nguni Cattle of the Zulu People, which was published to wide acclaim and the first edition of which is now valuable.

The illustration to the front of the dustjacket is by Leigh Voigt, who was also the illustrator of The Abundant Herds, while the back jacket illustrataion is from a painting by Thomas Baines.
Although rated fine for its overall quality, the boards are lightly rubbed at the foot, with white showing through, and the text (which was printed in Cape Town on inferior paper) is lightly and evenly toned throughout, contrasting with the endpapers.
