Biography of the renowned British colonial administrator Sir George Edward Grey (1812-1898). During his career he was Governor of South Australia (1841-45), New Zealand (1845-53), and the Cape Colony (1854-61). He was also the 11th Prime Minister of New Zealand. He was also an author and pioneer scholar of Maori culture and wrote a book about Polynesian mythology and the ancient traditional history of the New Zealand race.
Sir George Grey was an extraordinary book collector and donated his collection of Manuscripts, Maps, Incunabula, & Africana to the South African Library. He also financed the publication of books, including a grammar of the Hottentot language.
