Florence Phillips was the wife of Sir Lionel Phillips, a politician and mining executive in the Transvaal before the outbreak of the Anglo-Boer War, and Mrs (or more formally Lady) Phillips had her eyes and ears open to developments after the Jameson Raid of 1895
