This is a very nicely presented copy of what may be Theal\'s most accessible work, written for the publisher\'s \"Story of the Nations\" series.

Half-bound in red morocco and matching marbled paper boards, gilt and raised bands to the spine, head and tail bands. The same marbled endpapers. All page edges gilt. xxviii + 452 pp of text and index + frontispiece and folding map + 37 illustrations in the text.

The paper covers are rubbed front and back and the leather has a few rubbed areas. The binding is cracked between the tipped-in \"The Story of the Nations - Subscription Edition\" plate at the front and the half-title, and there is some other between-section cracking. The endpapers are clean. There is a dedication (in German) on the fly-leaf. The frontispiece and map are clean and unworn. There is a little foxing on the page edges, but no foxing elsewhere. There are some small brown stains on four or five pages.
