This book was based on the research Marguerite Poland conducted for her doctoral thesis (Department of Zulu, University of Natal, 1997). Her co-author was a prolific academic writer, the late David Hammond-Tooke, who was then the University of the Witwatersrand's professor emeritus of social anthropology. The illustrator was the painter Leigh Voigt. Photographs came from the Campbell Collection and several other individual photographers.

The book was dedicated "to the creative genius of the Zulu people and with love to the memory of Bert Schroeder, whose devotion to the study of Nguni cattle has been a source of constant inspiration"

This is another outstanding production from the Fernwood team, and particularly from the veteran design Willem Jordaan, with sponsorship from the Ernest Oppenheimer Memorial Trust and the Everard Read Gallery.

Illustrated laminated dustjacket, grey paper boards, with black design to the front and black lettering to the spine, printed endpapers, tight binding, and 144 pp of text, appendixes and index on heavy matt art stock - all in unmarked original condition in this copy with the exception of three very small dustjacket edge chips and almost imperceptable shelf-wear at the foot of the spine.

Demand for this book has been such that it was reprinted three times, most recently in 2011. This copy is, however, a copy the first standard edition, although in virtually as-new condition.
