This is a mint copy of the standard edition - "standard", in this case, being no less than de luxe, with fine design and production by Guy Winchester-Gould and binding by South Africa's leading quality bookbinder, the late Peter Carstens.
Quarter bound in green goatskin with gilt-on-red spine label in the pocket between two raised bands and matching hand-marbled paper sides, plain green endpapers, flyleaf followed by leaf with subscriber's name and copy number (235), colour frontispiece, title-page, copyright page, 2 pp list of subscribers, contents page followed by portraits and biographies of the original author (by F C Barnicoat) and artist (by Alan Kemp), the present status of the species described and illustrated (by S W Wolff), list of 68 plates - altogether 54 pp + the ix + 159 pp of text and index of the original 1912 book + 1 p of new index + the 68 pp of colour plates - making a total of 291 pp, all printed on matt art paper.
CONDITION. How can an almost 40-year-old book still have an overall condition rating of Mint? The late former owners had a major bird book collection in Johannesburg and kept their books in closed bookcases. This copy shows no signs of having been opened, let alone read, until the copy was collated for the presents auction. So, "Mint" it is, unless the buyer disagrees, when our money-back guarantee of condition may be exercised.
