This is the first edition of Holden's seminal book. The author, Reverend Holden was a Wesleyan missionary who spent 27 years in South Africa. Rapid change demanded frequent revision of this work and rendered the last section redundant. Theal attests to the accuracy and importance of the first two sections. (Mendelssohn's South African bibliography I, p. 725; Theal's Catalogue of South African Books & Pamphlets, p. 141). In 1963, Struik published a limited reprint edition of this important book.
