Maroon cloth-boards with a central gilt design and black lettering and ornate rules to the upper panel and gilt lettering and black ornate rules to the spine, black plain endpapers, frontispiece portrait and facsimile signature opposite the title-page, xii/412 pp of contents pages (to 33 chapters) and text, plus 12 pp of index and a 175 x 205 mm folding colour map but no other illustrations
The upper board has a few small bubbles and the lower board is lightly rubbed (see images), the front endpaper has a superficial crack (see image), but the binding remains undamaged, there are two ownership signatures on the half-title verso, there is occasional foxing to the text and three leaves are chipped, while the map and the back endpaper are both as-new
- These deficiencies apart, this eighth edition copy of 1897 remains very good overall - complete and with no other damage, markings or discolouration
