Sir Arnold Theiler is the father of veterinary science in South Africa. He was state veterinarian for the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek (Z.A.R.) during the Boer War when a team under his direction developed the rinderpest vaccine. He was the first Director of the Onderstepoort Veterinary Research Institute and carried out research on African Horse Sickness, Sleeping Sickness, Malaria and East Coast Fever (Theileria Parva).
