Cloth somewhat darkened and rubbed; backstrip a bit frayed; binding quite slack; bookplate of William Jardine, Applegarth, to front pastedown; sporadic foxing and light soiling; occasional discreet marginal pencilling. The author was twice taken prisoner by Boer forces, the second occasion at Reddersburg where a British detachment was overwhelmed by a force led by De Wet. He gives a full account of prison life at Pretoria and of setting up The Gram, a camp magazine. Concluding chapters relate to British occupation of Pretoria and reflections on the campaign to date.\" - Hackett: South African War Books, p. 107. The armorial bookplate of renowned bibliophile William Jardine is listed in \'South African Bookplates from the Percival J. G. Bishop Collection\' (Balkema, 1955). Jardine commanded detachments of the Cape Town Highlanders during the Anglo-Boer War. An interesting copy, and the first edition.
