" . . . by Emily Hobhouse"

This is an exceptionally good copy of a rare and valuable book - valuable not only because it was the author's last published work (she died two years later) or because it contains the stories of some thirty women affected by the war (about half in the survivors' original English and the other half in Dutch translated or, in one case, written from dictation by Emily Hobhouse), but also because it includes three of the author's exceptionally talented 1903 watercolour paintings, reproduced in colour and tipped into the book. There are also a further half-dozen inserted b/w plates.

There's no obvious explanation why the book was published so long after the end of the war. Perhaps Miss Hobhouse did not finish the work. Perhaps she could not find another publisher sooner (Nasionale Pers was certainly not a mainstream London publisher, though equally certainly it was a publisher very committed to the book's subject-matter).
