The photograph in Hackett (p 90) suggests that this (ex-library) copy of this rare book may have come from his collection. The summary from this source reads: "Narrative of a volunteer in the RAMC [Royal Army Medical Corps] engaged in transporting casualties from the front. The author relates incidents from the battles of Belmont, Graspan and Magersfontein, with reference to medical work in the field."

Bennett, the author, writes that he decided to add to the literature of the war in order to augment, however modestly, "the Fund [for the Widows and Families of Officers] established by the patriotism and energy of Lady Lansdowne and her Committee" through the donation of his royalties to the fund.

The Khaki cloth-boards, printed in black, red and white on the front and spine, are scuffed at the head of the spine. The binding is tight. The plain endpapers are lightly sunned. There are library stamps on the black-and-red title page and verso. Otherwise, the v + 127 pp of unillustrated text are unmarked and undiscoloured.
