'In 1976 Graham Bell-Cross produced The Fishes of Rhodesia, which was widely acclaimed by laymen, students and research scientists. The book was sold out by 1981 and with the continuing requests for copies coming in locally and from around the world, came the realisation that a reprint was necessary. However, by 1987 many changes in the taxonomy of African fishes had occurred, largely as a result of the work done by Dr. Humphry Greenwood of the British Museum (Natural History) and Dr. Paul Skelton of the J. L. B. Smith Institute of Ichtyology, Grahamstown, to both of whom we a grateful for many years of advice. New species to Zimbabwe had been discovered, new data on distribution and biology had accrued, and it was evident that a complete revision of the book had to be done. I am very grateful to Graham for allowing me to revise his book.' - introduction to the second edition

'Lake Kariba has now been in existence for thirty years and during this time a wealth of literature on the fish life has accumulated. The author, a former Senior Ecologist with National Parks and Wildlife Management, has delved deeply into this and drawn on ten years research experience on Kariba to produce this much-needed information and identification guide to Kariba's fishes.' - editor's note
