Preface: 'Eight years ago 'A First Book of South African Flowers' was published, and we offer our apologies for so considerable a delay in the appearance of 'A Second Book of South African Flowers.' For the last three or four years the earlier book has been out of print, and there have been constant demands for its re-issue as well as for the publication of 'A Second Book.' This continued interest has encouraged the publishers to embark upon the present venture, and we hope and believe their enterprise will meet with the success it well deserves. For the Wild Flower Protection Society could provide no contribution beyond the paintings, photographs, drawings, and notes which were prepared for a series of articles in 'Nature Notes' and 'South African Gardening' a few years ago. To these the publishers have now added coloured plates illustrating Stapelia and some of its allies, feeling that any work dealing with our native flora would be sadly defective if some representation of so important a constituent as the succulents were not included.
As in our previous volume the matter has been arranged in a botanical sequence and each of the four chapters contains examples of one of the larger groups into which flowering-plants may be classified.'
