Extremely rare first edition copy (limited edition). Signed by Ethel L. Gray and Jas. Gray (date, signatures and place signed by pen at the end of the 'Preface'). This magnificent and detailed documentation about the earliest history of the discovery of the Witwatersrand gold fields contains all important facts, events and persons involved; including 159 pages of photos of documentary evidence with reproductions of official, legal and other documents (contracts, permitions and agreements for gold mine properties, maps and sketches of possesions, registrations, licences, declarations, minutes, power of attorney's, letters, signatures of owners, diagrams, photographs, etc). Including the Reproduction of a section of a "Map of the Southern Transvaal shewing the Outcrops of the Banket Formation", compiled by F. H. Hatch in 1895, to accompany "The Gold Mines of the Rand" by F. H. Hatch and J. A. Chalmers. Also including the Reproduction of a section of a "Map of the Pretoria and Heidelberg Goldfields compiled from Diagrams of Surveyed Farms", by G. A. Troye, February, 1887.

Original publisher's green cloth binding; Text in English; Collation complete - Title page, [9], 189 pages, 159 pages of photos of documentary evidence (on glossy paper), Index of names, Index of places; Ex-library copy with usual markings. Library number to the bottom of the spine, labels to the front pastedown and free endpaper, small stamp to the title and a few stamps to the pages/text block, several stamps to the documentary evidence. Binding is tight and firm, with usual shelf wears mostly to the extremities, corners slightly bumped, boards little worn/smudged. Pages/text block clean and intact, no markings or foxing throughout, only library stamps to white margins of some pages. A sound copy.
