The book represents the first edition in this format where photos, rather than illustrations (as in the original 1989 edition), were used to illustrate all the known African Cycads in their natural habitat. The original text was also revised and newly discovered species were included. This is Volume I of what was planned to be a series of books relating to cycads, but unfortunately due to differences between publisher and author the project never went further.
