A first edition of the very scarce FIRST book in the Maasdorp series.

Stella Blakemore (1906-1991) was an Afrikaans author famous for her numerous children's series, the most popular being her Maasdorp series for girls and her Keurboslaan series for boys (written under the pseudonym Theunis Krogh). These two series have remained in print ever since and serves as a testament to their timeless appeal.

The author's father, Percy Blakemore, was a Captain in the British Army who married an Afrikaans girl during the Anglo-Boer War. I imagine that if someone had told him, during his voyage on a troop ship to South Africa, that he would end up marrying a daughter of the enemy, and that his own daughter would one day be the author of some of the most beloved children's books in the Afrikaans language, he would hardly have believed it!
