London: The Aquila Press, 1929, 25.5x19cm, 3/4 leather binding with five raised bands, gilt dentelles and lettering to spine, marbled endpapers, unnumbered pages [126], condition VG with joints lightly cracked but binding tight and solid, interior in Fine condition.
The Aquila Press was a short-lived (1929–1930) publishing house noted for hand-crafted books; Edward II was chosen as its debut title. Featuring a facsimile of the 1594 title page, hand-set Caslon Old Face type, Maillol paper, and heraldic art by Alexina Ogilvie, the book is a fine example of their craft.
One of the earliest English history plays, this work by Christopher Marlowe (1564-1593) compresses most of Edward II's reign into a single narrative, beginning with the recall from exile of his favorite, Piers Gaveston, and ending with his son, Edward III, executing Mortimer Junior for the king's murder.
